ART ATRIUM HOSTS SOLO EXHIBITION FEATURING
2009 WYNNE PRIZE FINALIST BRETT BAILEY
Official launch to be opened by leading cultural historian Dr John Thompson
5 April - 1 May
Art Atrium will host a solo exhibition featuring 2009 AGSM Wynne Prize finalist Brett Bailey in April to be opened by leading cultural historian, Dr John Thompson.
The exhibition will showcase Bailey's latest body of work, which illustrates his continued assimilation of Chinese and Japanese ideas of "painting the world" and the loving scrutiny, internalization and evocation of the Australian landscape.
Bailey said his influences range from "the romantic landscape painting tradition of Europe, including Turner, Samuel Palmer and the Ancients to Chinese Literati painting and Japanese individualists."
In his work, Bailey has reinvented and appropriated many Asian techniques by including titanium mica in his pigments, which allow what he describes as a range of "reflective lustres and the inclusion of `weather' in my images."
"I'm trying to create my own way of making vivid and plausible the phenomena and experiences of the natural world. It is an attempt to capture the essential meaning of the subject with forms deriving from my own unavoidable ideas and feelings about the subject. The truth of my own experience of nature," said Bailey.
"With a subjective transformation of my raw materials (making own paints) with an "untrammelled mind" I hope to share with others my joy in the world which all cultures share."
A recent move to live at Tathra, on the NSW south coast has also led to a response to the seascape in Bailey's latest work.
Director of Art Atrium Simon Chan said Art Atrium was delighted to feature Bailey in their next exhibition: "Art Atrium is a strong advocate of cross-cultural collaboration and Brett Bailey is a terrific example of this philosophy. Bailey is constantly trying to push and explore cultural boundaries to bring a multi-dimensional perspective to his art."
The exhibition will be officially launched by Dr John Thompson, a leading Australian cultural historian and reviewer of Art Monthly.
"Dr Thompson is a distinguished Australian academic, writer and historian. He brings an enormous amount of knowledge and understanding of Australian history and culture, which I think translates well to Brett's own interpretation of the Australian landscape," Art Atrium Director Simon Chan said.
