A perceptively funny work about the familiarities that breed contempt.
Joel (Damian de Montemas) and Carlo (Ben Mortley) have been friends since their college days where they dreamed of becoming professional photographers. Years have passed and they are now dealing with life's responsibilities: marriage, kids and mortgages. Joel has a career in advertising while Carlo is about to get his big break with a photographic exhibition in New York. Two painfully hilarious nights spent in each others homes with their wives, Sharyl (Caroline Craig) and Grace (Katharine Cullen), reveal the disappointments, jealousies and resentments that can grow between friends when they regret the life choices they have made.
Director Jennifer Don, in her second mainstage production for Ensemble Theatre, (she directed Cormac McCarthy's The Sunset Limited in October last year) has assembled a fabulous cast for this production.
Caroline Craig (Sharyl) is best known for her work on the TV series Blue Heelers and Underbelly: Series 1. She also narrated Underbelly: A Tale of Two Cities and Underbelly: The Golden Mile. While still at school Katharine Cullen (Grace) played a feral child in Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome, Little Pam in Jane Campion's A Girls Own Story, then appeared in the tv series Hills End and played the lead role in The Girl From Tomorrow. On stage she has appeared in Humble Boy and I Ought To Be In Pictures with her father/ actor Max Cullen for Ensemble Theatre, and A Month in the Country, Way of the World and Gallipoli for STC. Damian de Montemas (Joel) is best known for his television roles as Jason Kennedy in the first two series of The Secret Life of Us and Brian Alexander in Underbelly: A Tale of Two Cities. He has also appeared in All Saints, Blue Heelers, Home and Away and the film Somersault and the upcoming feature film BLAME. Ben Mortley (Carlo) is best known for his role as Alberto Borelli in McLeods Daughters and he also appeared in the film Lantana.
JOEL: You've caught us at a bad time. Sharyl and I have been, well, how would you describe it, Sharyl?
SHARYL: We're getting a divorce. Let's have dessert.
