Information
After five years of performing in Sydney for its dedicated following of music lovers, the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra (TSO) is back for one concert only on 14 October at City Recital Hall with one of its favourite violinists, Vadim Gluzman.
In this, his third concert series with the TSO, Gluzman will play one of the most difficult and virtuosic works in the violin repertoire, Ravel’s Tzigane, a showpiece in every sense.
“Vadim Gluzman came to the attention of Isaac Stern in his teens and it’s obvious why Gluzman was supported by this great violinist. Gluzman’s extraordinary talent sees his performances widely considered as ‘big’ and ‘dramatic’. Indeed The Detroit Free Press has described Gluzman’s sound as ‘hot-wired’”, says TSO Chief Conductor and Artistic Director Sebastian Lang Lessing Sebastian Lang-Lessing.
“The TSO is delighted to have him join us in performing Prokofiev and Ravel, works that are a perfect showcase for both him and this orchestra.”
With reminiscences of Russian folklore, Prokofiev’s second Violin Concerto is a landmark 20th-century violin concerto and highlights the ‘new simplicity’ of Prokofiev’s music of the 1930s.
Written by Ravel for the brilliant Hungarian violinist Jelly d’Aranyi, Tzigane (meaning ‘gypsy’, especially ‘Hungarian gypsy’), has been also recorded by Vadim Gluzman on his Fireworks CD, a collection of virtuoso violin show pieces.
Another work from Ravel – one of the great neoclassical works of the 20th century – the Le Tombeau de Couperin is considered among his finest. The French composer is renowned for his delicate, transparent, jewel-like orchestration and this works plays perfectly to the TSO’s size and strengths.
The final piece in the concert is Beethoven’s penultimate symphony, his eighth. It’s a tuneful, dance-like symphony which shows off Beethoven’s playful side and its instrumentation ideally suits the TSO’s.
