2016 Chippendale New World Art Prize - Entries now open!

$10,000 art prize open to emerging Australian creatives. Three month Italian residency steeped in history.

The Chippendale Creative Precinct is encouraging emerging creative practitioners across Australia to enter the Chippendale New World Art Prize (CNWAP).

Join us for our latest activation of Kensington Street, as its unconventional exhibition spaces are taken over by the fourth annual Chippendale New World Art Prize.

Artists and creatives alike will be showcasing their innovative works throughout the industrial architecture of The Old Rum Store, the Kensington Contemporary galleries, and Kensington Street’s charming Federation terraces.

This year’s judging panel includes, head curator of Australian Art at the Art Gallery of NSW, Wayne Tunnicliffe, the renowned Australian Art Collector, Pat Corrigan, arts philanthropist and the prize’s benefactor, Dr Stanley Quek, the former Chairman of Frasers Property Australia and current Executive Chairman of Greencliff Pty Ltd.

Our expert judges will choose the lucky winner who will receive a three-month residency at the Arte Studio Ginestrelle on Mount Subasio in Assisi, Italy, worth $10,000. This continues the Chippendale New World Art Prize’s venture further into the Mediterranean, after previous winners travelled to host countries Greece and Spain and prior to that Beijing, China. The winner will have an opportunity to experience a different culture, learn from international artists while practising their craft, and ultimately exhibit works in their host country.

With the winner being offered this once in a lifetime prize, all finalist works are to be curated in an exhibition to open on the Thursday 2 June to the Sunday 26 June, 2016.

On the opening night the winner will be announced, along with the runners up, and the all-important People’s Choice Award.

Each year the prize takes on a new theme. This year’s theme is ‘spirit’, which invigorates the creative communities and spaces we thrive in. In Sydney’s downtown, Chippendale glows through the smoke and fog to illuminate a new age, and it is this spirit of both people and place burning brightly together we will see in the 2016 creations.

With works in all mediums we expect this year to see a diverse series of entries including painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, animation, film, interactive media, light, sound, and the inclusion of new technologies.

Furthermore the Chippendale New World Art Prize is celebrating with a Feast for the Senses on Friday 3 March, 6 – 10PM, at Kensington Street’s latest culinary venture, Upper Mekong. Enjoy tantalising Indo-Chine cuisine skilfully created by internationally acclaimed chef Tiw Rakarin, as you engage with special guest speakers and the winner of the Chippendale New World Art Prize.
