Bistrot Gavroche: A Taste of France

Reviewed by Georgia Cassimatis

Tired of seeing instagram photos of friends dining, sight seeing and chatting in cafes in Paris? Want to go to France but feel you’ll never get there? Well you can get your bonafide French fix right here in the heart of Sydney at Bistrot Gavroche, Sydney’s answer to experiencing a traditional Parisian bistro.

Housed in Kensington Street Chippendale’s beautiful refurbished rum warehouse, Chef Owner Frederic Colin’s menu pays homage to recipes from his youth, where he cooked in his grand père (grandfather) Henri’s restaurant and kitchen.

From snails to onion soup, taste the ‘Escargots’ baked in garlic, and the ‘Soupe a l’Oignon’. My favourites; the hearty red wine Boeuf Bourguignon and the mouthwatering Crepes Suzette: heated with a live flame and dripped in Grand Marnier sauce.

Chef Ferederic’s suggestion? “For your first visit Grandpa Henri’s French Onion Soup is a must. It’s so simple and classic, but yet such comforting food, and especially with Winter.”

Bistrot Gavroche is the perfect backdrop for entertaining, celebrations and corporate functions. The wine list showcases some of the best vintages from French and Australian wineries. A glass of red or white Homage is a must, and for the lovers of Champagne, Pommery.
