MERCHANT OF VENICE FOR LIVE STREAMED AUGUST PERFORMANCE
After staging boundary-breaking performances of both THE TEMPEST and TITUS ANDRONICUS,
Streamed Shakespeare now looks beyond dramatic readings to stage fully realized,
streamed theatrical performances with contemporary implications.
Streamed Shakespeare is proud to announce its newest production: THE MERCHANT OF VENICE!
Sydney based actor/director Roslyn Hicks will be taking the reins to bring the story of a vengeful moneylender
and an unlucky trader to Streamed Shakespeare’s ever-expanding audience.
The cast includes theatre luminaries, including Sydney based actor and director Haki Pepo Olu Crisden as Antonio,
popular Jewish-Australian performer Geoff Sirmai as Shylock and – as Portia - Jess Loudon,
an Auckland-based Australian actor best known for her roles with Pop-Up Globe and Sport for Jove theatre companies.
The cast also features Jamie Collette, Holly Champion, Jacqui Greenfield, Samantha Winsor, Adriane White,
Jim Southwell, Chiara Osborne, Kim Jones, Susan Jordan, Meredith O’Reilly, Adeeb Razzouk & Jessie Tromp.
The production will be particularly topical as it will tackle contemporary questions of tolerance vs inclusion,
revenge vs reconciliation, as seen through the lens of current events.
“I think the one [passage] I keep coming back to is 'I can easier teach twenty what were good to be done than to be one of the twenty to follow mine own teaching.' Portia says it in Act 1 Scene 2. I think it sums up our hypocrisy when we know what the better thing to do would be,
but it is much harder to be the one humble enough actually to do it.” - Director Roslyn Hicks
The production will be a fully realized, theatrical performance as opposed to a staged, dramatic reading.
The production season runs from August 21st – August 23rd - with two matinees (Friday and Sunday) and a Saturday night performance.
For the first time, schools will be able to access the live performance August 21st as an enrichment activity to deepen students’ understanding of the play.
Streamed Shakespeare’s artistic director Holly Champion, director Hicks, and members of the cast
will also be available to answer questions about performance, Shakespeare, and related topics.
Streamed Shakespeare has performed 13 Shakespearean dramatic readings since its inception
to an Australia-wide and international audience that recently topped the 40,000 mark.
Those performances have evolved from simple streamed re-tellings to highly realized productions, including music, video backgrounds, animation and visual effects.
One might expect the fledgling theatre company to rest on its laurels and take a breath. Not so.
With so many exciting changes and opportunities on the horizon, the only limit to Streamed Shakespeare’s activities is their boundless imagination;
the future seems very bright, indeed.
