Opera Australia Celebrates 150 Performances of Madama Butterfly

Celebrating the 150th performance of the stunningly beautiful Madama Butterfly

Directed by Moffatt Oxenbould

Opera Australia's production of Madama Butterfly is now the most successful opera at Sydney Opera House, celebrating its 150th performance on Wednesday 25 February. Madama Butterfly, is playing at Sydney Opera House until 28 March 2015.

This is a huge achievement for this magnificent production, with more than 200,000 people seeing it in Sydney since its premiere season in 1997. This is likely to be the final Sydney season, so if it's an old favourite, see it again, and for those who haven't yet been, it could be the last chance to see this truly beautiful opera.

To celebrate, Opera Australia is inviting 150 students* to see Madama Butterfly on Wednesday 25 February for 150 cents each. Yes, that's an opera ticket for just $1.50 (no booking fee)! To book, students need to go to either Opera Australia's box office at 480 Elizabeth Street Surry Hills, or the Sydney Opera House box office from 9am on Wednesday 25 February with their ID and cash**. Limit to two tickets per student. First in, best dressed!

For its 150th performance, Australian soprano Antoinette Halloran will take the role of the young and determined Cio-Cio-San, with Australian tenor James Egglestone as Pinkerton and maestro Anthony Legge on the podium. Despite the turmoil of the relationships on stage (boy meets girl; boy gets girl; boy hotfoots it back to America; girl waits and waits...) the behind-the-scenes surprise is that Antoinette and James are actually a real-life couple!

This luscious production comes from Australian director Moffatt Oxenbould. The simple lines, great blocks of colour, bold choreography and clever use of screens and water are like an artwork on stage. The production has been seen not just in Sydney but all over the world, travelling to China, Canada and America. In fact, the total number of performances, in Australia and internationally, is well over 200!

Madama Butterfly currently ranks at No.1 in Opera America's list of most performed operas in North America, winning audiences with its iconic arias, including Cio-Cio-San's breathtaking and poignant ‘Un bel dì vedremo' (‘One Beautiful Day') and the beautifully delicate ‘Coro a bocca chiusa' (‘Humming Chorus').

Tickets for Madama Butterfly start at $69.
