Peter Allen was an entertainer unlike any other before or since. Long before Lady Gaga or Glee, the songs of Peter Allen occupied that slightly camp place in the hearts of millions of adoring fans around the world, and still do today!
After a critically acclaimed season in 2018, Matthew Hadgraft (Elton John: The Genesis of Glam, Cabaret, The Producers, The Road to Stockholm, Classy As All Of Youse, ABBALive) returns to Sydney Fringe Festival in 2019 with his celebrated cabaret production Peter Allen Live In Inverted Commas to Sydney audiences for the first time. Originally debuting in 2015, Peter Allen Live In Inverted Commas sees Hadgraft stepping into the shoes of the venerated Australian composer for a night of song, celebration, and all the flamboyance Allen was famous for.
Hadgraft first portrayed Allen in the Gold Coast production of The Boy From Oz (Spotlight Theatre), so staging a cabaret show as the legend himself was a natural fit for the seasoned entertainer. "Peter Allen himself always said his songs were his life story, so they make the job of writing a cabaret a lot easier! And what a colourful life it was," says Hadgraft.
Produced by Hadgraft and director Rhylee Nowell (Faff & Sass Productions), Peter Allen Live In Inverted Commas invites its audience to share in the glorious music that Allen was most popular for, as well as lesser-known pieces that made up his wide-ranging catalogue. Whether you're a well-versed fan of Allenor a total cabaret newbie, Hadgraft's manifestation of the larger than life artist is a captivating, laugh-out-loud, feel-good tribute to the legendary entertainer!
