THE WEATHERBIRDS
Weatherbirds is the joyous musical collaboration between trumpeter Bernice Tesara and saxophonist/pianist Max Leggott. Bred on the grounds of the Sydney Conservatorium, their music pays homage to jazz standards. They draw influence from the clave of Cam Undy, Greg Sheean’s rhythm diamonds, and the chordless quartets of Gerry Mulligan.
EPHEMERA QUARTET
"Hypnotic, transformative" DOWNTOWN MUSIC, NEW YORK
"Full of sonic textures and infinite possibilities." THE MUSIC TRUST
Ephemera offers a musical exploration of celestial landscapes. The themes include pulsars, craters, planetary atmospheres, stars, the sun and the void. Merging the sound worlds of jazz and contemporary classical, the performance is set to real space sounds and projections. It creates a unique sonic experience.
The ensemble is led by Keyna Wilkins (piano/flute/compositions), Elsen Price (double bass/loop pedal), and Will Gilbert (trumpet), with the new addition of Jodie Michael (drumset), and includes freely improvised pieces. NASA recordings of electromagnetic waves from planets and stars are the backdrop soundtrack and have been compiled by astronomer Professor Paul Francis, often with projections of space probe footage. Each member brings their own unique voice to the ensemble, drawing from a multitude of musical backgrounds that combine to create a distinctive sound world that organically reacts to stellar concepts. Universe and Universality. They have released 2 albums on all streaming platforms: Blackholes and Modulations (2021) and Orbits and Riffs (2017).
Formed in 2015, this ensemble has performed internationally and around Australia, including 6 concerts in Japan, being featured at MONA Evenings Series, Extended Play Festival of New Music at City Recital Hall and Sydney International Women's Jazz Festival, at Foundry 616, Red Rattler, Woodburn Creatives and Melbourne's Uptown Jazz Cafe and many more.
