This winter, St Anne's Catholic Church in Bondi will become the setting for an extraordinary evening where candlelight, sacred architecture and timeless choral music come together in one immersive performance.
More than forty musicians from four of Sydney's leading sacred music ensembles will perform works spanning nearly six centuries, culminating in Antonio Vivaldi's beloved Gloria. Created specifically for the acoustics and beauty of the parish church, the concert invites audiences to experience sacred music in the environment for which much of it was originally written.
The Programme
Journey through nearly six centuries of sacred choral music, from the simplicity of Gregorian chant to contemporary composers, before the evening reaches its joyful conclusion.
Featured composers include:
• Gregorian Chant • William Byrd • Ralph Vaughan Williams • James MacMillan • Ola Gjeilo • Joe Twist • Antonio Vivaldi – Gloria
Four Ensembles, One Shared Performance
Artes Christi, Coro Austral, The Solis Ensemble and Quart-Ed unite for a unique production created specifically for St Anne's Catholic Church.
Throughout the evening, singers will move beyond the sanctuary and around the congregation, surrounding listeners with music in a rare spatial performance designed to make the audience part of the experience.
The concert also marks one of Coro Austral's final Sydney performances before the choir departs on its international tour of Portugal and Spain later this year.
“This music was written for spaces like this. When you remove it from the church and place it in a concert hall, something of its original meaning is lost.”
— Michael Murphy, Music Director
