Katoomba Winter Magic Festival

Each year, as the sun reaches its lowest point in the sky and the longest night of the year settles over the Blue Mountains, Katoomba transforms. Streets fill with creative arts and music, cloaked figures move through the mist, and a sense of ancient ritual blends seamlessly with modern creativity.

Drawing around 30,000 visitors Winter Magic is far more than a festival. It is a communal celebration of the odd, the mysterious and the beautifully unconventional, in line with this year’s theme - Positively Weird.

A vibrant street parade forms the heart of the festival, with drumming, dancing and imaginative costumes. Visitors are invited to dress in a way that embraces the theme – however they interpret it. A free dress-up closet is provided those wanting to catch the vibe.

More than 100 stalls line the route, offering every possible temptation, from delectable food to jewels and fashion. Music weaves through the festival from morning into the night, with performances of all kinds filling local venues and echoing through the crisp mountain air. Fire performances, live art and immersive installations add to the atmosphere, while creative workshops and activities ensure the festival remains welcoming for families as well as seasoned festival-goers.

What makes Winter Magic truly special is its sense of belonging. This is a festival that openly celebrates difference and creativity. It attracts artists, musicians, pagans, goths, steampunk enthusiasts, families, and travellers simply seeking something outside the ordinary.
