Information
This writing course, Adventures Among Essays with Anwen Crawford, takes place at Writing NSW in Sydney.
The essay is a forgiving form. It can encompass any subject you can think of, from the philosophical to the whimsical. An essay about forks? Why not. An essay about how to live well? There have been many.
But essays can be intimidating, too. For a start, many of us struggle to shake off the association between essay-writing and homework. Writing creative essays can be a lot more fun than that, but it also means laying our interests bare for a reader. Essays are an exciting opportunity to bring a reader along with the train of our thought and discovery, but how do we do that in a way that’s engaging rather than merely self-indulgent?
In this workshop with Anwen Crawford you will consider different aspects of essay writing, including how and where to look for a topic, how to match your tone and essay approach to your subject, and tips for essay structure. We will look at examples of the essay form and undertake in-class writing exercises.
