Tom Molomby in conversation with David Marr
The book is a collection of some 35 intriguing cases with surprising twists and turns. Many involve deeply emotional and tragic situations. Their story is told from the inside with reflections on the process and the difficult decisions that a barrister has to make.
They include;
the trial of Tim Anderson in 1990 for the Hilton bombing, lost at trial but won on appeal.
the challenge to the winner of the 2004 Archibald Prize on the basis that his work was a drawing not a painting.
the defence of a woman sued for defamation by a millionaire phoney guru against whom she had been persistently blogging.
the defence of a Green councillor sued for defamation by one of the country's biggest developers for what she had said about him in opposing some of his projects.
defending the university student who ran towards Prince Charles firing a starting pistol, expecting to be shot down, and thus obtain publicity for the cause of boat people.
These cases raise fundamental questions about the quest for truth, the force of prejudice, and the real nature of justice.
