Club Flamingo brings a colourful afternoon nightclub to Surry Hills, with dancing, aerial circus, DJ hits, mocktails and family-friendly fun.
The word it out! Club Flamingo is THE place to be on a Saturday afternoon; an afternoon nightclub for parents....wait, and kids between 5-12! Yes you can have a Kid Friendly Mocktail with your French Martini babyyy and groove to hit songs that appeal to everyone including ‘Pony’ by ‘Ginuwine’. If you know you know. Wink. Wink.
The venue itself is delightful. The little lane way leads to a quaint, buzzy outdoor playground full of flamingos, cocktails, sparkles, pink hats, and yellow and fluorescent sunnies. After spying a couple of parents sipping oversized Pink Martinis, I ordered my own, before jumping into the Flamingo photobooth, because well ‘A Flamingo Made Me Do it’ right? It’s clear pretty quickly that this place has a vibe…a kid vibe that adults like me like.
Amidst the pre-show shenanigans, we are met by Aerial Artist/Live Circus Performer extraordinaire Mariia (Mariia Borysiak) at the main doors, which open up leading us into the Grand Electric theatre; a giant dance floor with a stage in the round, disco balls twirling, lights shimmering, the red velvet giving it a moulin-rouge vibe.
Soon a clip clopping sound is heard and the shy, slow grooving Chaos Coordinator Blue Pony (Hilton Dennis) starts tapping his way around the club until the Queen herself, DJ Flamingo (Lou P Scarlett) in all her fluffy pinkness launches herself behind her pink neon lit cassette style DJ booth, declaring she was well and truly ready to party with all her ‘little party animals’!
‘I want you to dance like you have ants in your pants, and laugh like a kookaburra!’ she says, while teaching them some hippy moves. At one stage she even teaches them how to do the Macarena. Hello adults! Thankyou DJ Flamingo for passing on the baton.
The hits then pour forth and the interactivity begins: Congo lines and fashion parades Studio 54 style groove to hits like It’s Raining Men, Don’t Stop Groovin’ (S Club), Have We Got News for You, and what’s a club without a Spice Girl song? Stop Right Now Thankyou Very Much...!
Then just as you’re swooning over Chaos Coordinator Blue Pony’s slow groove dancing to Pony by Ginuwine with memories of (ahem) Magic Mike, along comes Aerial Artist Mariia giving Cirque De Soleil a run for its money with extraordinary mid-air hoop routines, followed by Adam the hoop master himself performing jaw dropping party tricks; juggling up to six hoops at one time.
High on adrenaline, stimulation and entertainment, the hour long show offers one thing for sure; fun, positivity, bubbles and lots of spice! Spice Girls style that is.
As DJ Flamingo ends the show with Spice Up Your Life, the crowd tumbles out into the little courtyard where it all began, as though they emerged from a dream; one big, pink, sparkly dream.
