I'd Rather Goya Robbed Me Of My Sleep Than Some Other Son of a Bitch

Reviewed by Georgia Cassimatis

A father with two young sons has an existential crisis, and comes up with the outlandish, yet ‘logically passionate’ plan, to trade in his children’s desire to go to Disneyland, and instead break into the Padro Museum to see Goya’s paintings while sniffing cocaine, eating Chorizo and drinking scotch. At the same time he’ll fly in a German philosopher to accompany them. All because he can no longer live the Capitalistic lie humans are spoon-fed, anymore, especiallyDisneyland.

A one man show, with the haunting, beautiful sounds of an accompanying Cellist, the audience is swept away by the romance and angst of the father’s confronting, no-holds barred existential meltdown, where he sees high art and philosophy as the world’s onlysalvation.

Written by one of Europe’s most prominent, controversial playwrights and directors, Rodrigo Garcia, it is apt that the Australian Premiere took place at the romantic, heritage listed Old 505 Theatre; an artist-run performance space, which showcases brave, raw, questioning and highly political theatre, with a touch of humour.
