Storytime Ballet: Cinderella Will Bring Ballet Magic to Sydney's Youngest Audiences

Storytime Ballet will enchant Sydney families from 17 December 2026 to 3 January 2027 with an interactive Cinderella performance at the Sydney Opera House.

As Sydney settles into the long rhythm of the summer holidays, families will begin filling the city's theatres alongside its beaches, parks and harbourside walks. December has always carried a sense of possibility for children, and among the many seasonal outings, one performance will invite young imaginations to step into a world where fairy godmothers appear, pumpkins become carriages and glass slippers still have the power to change a life.

Storytime Ballet will return to Sydney with Cinderella, offering children their first encounter with classical ballet through an experience designed as much for participation as performance. Presented by The Australian Ballet at the Drama Theatre in the Sydney Opera House, the production will transform one of the city's most recognisable cultural venues into an accessible and welcoming space for audiences aged three years and older.

Rather than asking children to sit quietly through a traditional full-length ballet, Storytime Ballet embraces curiosity, movement and imagination, making the performing arts feel less like something to observe from afar and more like something to discover together.

Storytime Ballet Introduces Ballet Through Storytelling

For many families, Storytime Ballet will become a first visit to live ballet. That first experience matters.

The production has been carefully created to meet young audiences where they are, blending narration, music and dance into a performance lasting just 50 minutes. An engaging storyteller guides children through the familiar tale of Cinderella, helping them follow the action while encouraging them to respond naturally as the story unfolds.

There is no expectation that young audiences remain perfectly still. Quite the opposite. Dressing in favourite princess costumes, fairy wings or ballet outfits is warmly encouraged, as is dancing in seats when the music inspires movement.

This relaxed atmosphere removes many of the uncertainties parents sometimes feel when introducing children to theatre for the first time.

Instead, the experience celebrates wonder in all its lively forms.

Storytime Ballet Brings Cinderella to the Sydney Opera House

Few stories have travelled across cultures and generations as successfully as Cinderella.

In Storytime Ballet, the familiar narrative remains beautifully intact. Cinderella lives under the watchful eye of her unkind stepmother and stepsisters until the arrival of her fairy godmother changes everything. A magical transformation, a glittering gown, sparkling glass slippers and a royal ball lead towards one of the world's most enduring happily-ever-afters.

Former Artistic Director David McAllister has choreographed the production specifically for younger audiences, preserving the elegance of classical ballet while adapting its storytelling for children discovering dance for the very first time.

The music of Sergei Prokofiev, performed by Orchestra Victoria under the direction of Jonathan Lo, provides the emotional heartbeat of the performance. Rich orchestral passages accompany graceful choreography, introducing children to one of ballet's most celebrated scores in an approachable format.

Every element has been thoughtfully scaled without losing the artistic integrity that defines The Australian Ballet.

Storytime Ballet Creates a Welcoming Theatre Experience

One of the greatest strengths of Storytime Ballet lies not only in the production itself but also in the atmosphere surrounding it.

Children often experience the performing arts differently from adults. They ask questions, point towards favourite characters and respond instinctively to music and movement.

Rather than discouraging those reactions, Storytime Ballet embraces them.

The relaxed setting allows families to enjoy the performance without worrying about perfect theatre etiquette, helping children build positive early memories of live performance.

Accessibility has also been carefully considered. During the Sydney season, Audio Described performances will take place on Tuesday 22 December at 2pm, while Auslan Interpreted performances will be presented on Sunday 27 December at both 2pm and 4pm, allowing more families to experience the production together.

These thoughtful additions reflect a growing commitment to ensuring the arts remain welcoming and inclusive for audiences of all ages and abilities.

A Sydney Summer Tradition in the Making

The Sydney Opera House has long served as a gathering place for performances that define the city's cultural calendar.

Hosting Storytime Ballet within the Drama Theatre continues that tradition while opening its doors to an entirely new generation of theatre-goers.

Many children attending this summer may return years later for larger productions, carrying with them memories of the first time they watched dancers glide across a stage beneath theatrical lights.

Those early encounters often become the foundation for lifelong appreciation – not only of ballet but of live performance itself.

For visiting families exploring Sydney during the school holidays, Storytime Ballet also offers a welcome contrast to outdoor attractions. Combined with a walk through the Royal Botanic Garden or along Circular Quay, an afternoon performance creates an experience that blends culture, architecture and family time in one of Australia's most recognisable settings.
