Antarctica! will arrive at Sydney Opera House from 25 July to 2 August 2026, inviting families into an immersive sensory journey inspired by Shackleton's expedition.
Winter has a way of sharpening the imagination. As cool harbour winds sweep across Bennelong Point and the sails of the Sydney Opera House catch the pale afternoon light, thoughts naturally drift towards places where ice stretches beyond the horizon and silence becomes part of the landscape. This winter, families will be invited to step beyond Sydney's shoreline and into one of the world's most extraordinary environments when Antarctica! arrives at the Opera House for a limited season.
Running from 25 July to 2 August 2026, Antarctica! will transform the intimate Utzon Room into a sensory landscape of drifting snow, shifting light and gentle sound. Inspired by Sir Ernest Shackleton's legendary Antarctic expedition, the production will tell a story of endurance, friendship and resilience through music, movement and immersive theatre, offering an experience that speaks as much through feeling as through narrative.
Created by Irish sensory artist Phillida Eves and performer Amélie Bal, Antarctica! has been thoughtfully designed for young children and children with disability, creating a welcoming theatrical environment where every participant is encouraged to engage in their own way.
Antarctica! Reimagines an Extraordinary Expedition
Few places capture the imagination quite like Antarctica.
It is a continent defined by extremes, where shifting ice, endless skies and vast silence shape every journey. Rather than recreating the frozen continent with elaborate scenery alone, Antarctica! will evoke its atmosphere through carefully layered sensory experiences that encourage curiosity, exploration and participation.
The production draws inspiration from Shackleton's famous Endurance expedition, one of history's most remarkable survival stories. When the ship became trapped in sea ice before eventually sinking beneath the Antarctic waters, the expedition transformed from exploration into an extraordinary test of teamwork, perseverance and hope.
In Antarctica!, that historical journey becomes a gentle framework rather than a history lesson. Children will join the crew aboard an imagined voyage where cooperation matters more than destination, and where discovery unfolds through shared experience rather than spoken explanation.
Antarctica! Creates Theatre Through Music and Movement
Unlike traditional children's theatre, Antarctica! will rely very little on words.
Instead, performers will guide audiences using live music, expressive movement, textured props and carefully crafted soundscapes that create an immersive world of snowfields, icy winds and floating icebergs.
Soft fabrics become drifting snow. Gentle rhythms suggest the creaking of frozen ships. Carefully designed lighting shifts the mood from quiet wonder to moments of uncertainty before returning to warmth and reassurance.
This sensory storytelling allows children to respond naturally, whether through movement, observation, touch or quiet reflection. Every performance will encourage participation on each child's own terms, creating an environment where there is no single right way to experience the story.
Running for approximately 45 minutes, the production has been carefully paced to maintain engagement while allowing moments of calm and connection to emerge naturally.
Inclusive Theatre for Every Family
Accessibility sits at the heart of Antarctica!, not as an added feature but as the foundation of the production itself.
Originally commissioned by Ireland's Baboró International Arts Festival for Children, the work has been created for general audiences with children aged four to eight while also supporting children and young people aged 12 to 18 with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities.
Rosán Sensory Adventures, led by artistic director Phillida Eves, has developed a distinctive approach that places collaboration with children at the centre of the creative process. Rather than expecting audiences to adapt to theatre conventions, the performance adapts to meet audiences where they are.
This philosophy creates a welcoming environment where participation can be active or quiet, playful or reflective. Families are encouraged to experience the performance together without pressure or expectation, allowing every child to engage according to their individual needs.
For many families, this approach opens the door to theatre experiences that are both accessible and artistically rich.
The Utzon Room Becomes a Frozen Landscape
Although Antarctica lies thousands of kilometres south of Sydney, the journey begins much closer to home.
Visitors arriving at the Sydney Opera House will follow the familiar paths around Bennelong Point before entering the Utzon Room, one of the Opera House's most intimate performance spaces. Known for its harbour views and warm timber interiors, the room will become an unexpected setting for a voyage across frozen seas.
Outside, ferries will continue crossing Sydney Harbour while children prepare to board an imaginary expedition unlike any ordinary family outing. Inside, sound, texture and movement will reshape the space into an ever-changing polar landscape where imagination fills the distance between Sydney and the southernmost continent.
The contrast between the sparkling harbour and the imagined Antarctic wilderness becomes part of the experience itself, reminding audiences that great adventures often begin with a simple act of curiosity.
A Journey Home Through Ice and Imagination
At its heart, Antarctica! is not simply about survival in an icy wilderness.
It is about discovering trust, kindness and resilience through shared experience. As the voyage unfolds, the frozen landscape becomes a place where friendships deepen, courage quietly emerges and home takes on new meaning.
Long after the final notes fade and families step back into the Sydney afternoon, fragments of the journey may linger – a flutter of white fabric recalling falling snow, the echo of music suggesting distant winds, or the memory of moving together through an unfamiliar world.
