Sydney rocker Col Ganderton talks Rolling Stones Revival, live music, Sugarplum Sound Studios and keeping classic rock alive.
For decades, Sydney musician Col Ganderton has built a career around live music, classic rock and creative collaboration. Best known for leading Rolling Stones Revival and performing in the Face to Face – Angels Show, Col has become a familiar face across the NSW live music scene. Away from the stage, he also runs Sugarplum Sound Studios, helping local artists rehearse, record and develop their sound.
Whether performing to packed crowds or mentoring musicians behind the scenes, Col’s approach has remained the same throughout his career – stay passionate, work hard and keep the music alive.
Growing Up Around Music
Music was part of Col’s life from the very beginning. With a grandfather who was a musician, creativity and performance were deeply connected to family life.
“I grew up surrounded by music,” he says. “My grandfather was a musician, so it was always part of the family DNA.”
His journey started on drums before moving into guitar and vocals. Along the way, he became heavily influenced by the artists dominating television music shows throughout the 1970s and 1980s.
“As a kid, I spent weekends glued to Countdown and the music shows, discovering the classic storytellers like Springsteen and the big ’80s rock bands – AC/DC, Mötley Crüe, Bon Jovi and Guns N’ Roses.”
That mix of storytelling, energy and unforgettable hooks shaped his musical direction and inspired his passion for performing live.

How Rolling Stones Revival Came Together
While Col has worked on many projects throughout his career, Rolling Stones Revival became one of his most successful and recognisable ventures almost by accident.
“Rolling Stones Revival came together in a really organic way,” he explains. “I originally joined as a fill-in, just helping the band out when they needed someone.”
Over time, Col became a permanent member before eventually stepping into the role of bandleader. Since then, he has helped shape the group into a high-energy live act known for recreating the atmosphere and swagger of a classic Rolling Stones performance.
For Col, the appeal of the Stones comes down to the music itself.
“Their songs are unbeatable – the groove, the swagger, the energy,” he says. “They’re incredible to play live and the crowds always respond.”
He believes the enduring popularity of The Rolling Stones comes from timeless songwriting combined with an undeniable stage presence.
“The music creates a spark that feels alive every time it’s played,” he says. “That combination of iconic songs, attitude and connection is why their impact never fades.”
The Energy of Performing Live
For audiences attending a Rolling Stones Revival show, the experience is designed to capture the excitement and connection of a classic rock concert.
“Performing a Rolling Stones show is an electric experience,” Col says. “The moment the first riff hits, there’s this instant connection between the band and the crowd.”
Rather than simply performing covers, the band focuses on recreating the spirit and energy that made the Stones one of the biggest live acts in music history.
“We’re not just playing the music; we’re recreating that classic Stones swagger and letting the audience be part of it,” he explains.
That audience connection is also what continues to drive Col after decades in the industry.
“What keeps me passionate about performing live is the mix of creativity, connection and challenge,” he says. “There’s a real satisfaction in putting in the effort it takes to deliver a great show.”
For first-time concertgoers, he promises an energetic and immersive night built around classic songs and crowd interaction.
“We bring the swagger, the groove and the live feel that makes the Stones so legendary,” he says. “It’s a fun, loud, feel-good night where the audience is part of the experience from the first chord to the last.”

Supporting Sydney Artists Through Sugarplum Sound Studios
Away from the stage, Col has spent nearly three decades helping musicians develop their craft through Sugarplum Sound Studios.
Operating since 1996, the studio has become a trusted rehearsal and recording space for Sydney artists preparing new material and refining live performances.
“I love working with other musicians and supporting them on their creative journey,” he says.
One of the most rewarding aspects of the studio is watching artists grow and achieve success after years of dedication.
“It’s incredibly rewarding when a band I’ve worked with ends up on national radio or TV, or gets the chance to tour with major Australian or international acts.”
The studio also keeps Col connected to Sydney’s evolving music community and the musicians constantly pushing themselves creatively.
“What I enjoy most about being part of Sydney’s music scene is the mix of dedication, creativity and pure enthusiasm that drives it,” he explains.
Looking Ahead
The future remains busy for Col Ganderton and Rolling Stones Revival, with performances scheduled across Sydney and regional NSW throughout the year. Alongside live shows, Col continues balancing studio projects with multiple artists currently recording new music at Sugarplum Sound Studios.
“The band is in a great place creatively and musically,” he says. “We’re focused on keeping the show fresh, tight and full of energy.”
After decades in the industry, Col’s passion for live music remains unchanged. Whether he’s performing classic rock anthems on stage or helping new artists shape their sound behind the scenes, his dedication to Australian music continues to leave a lasting impact on Sydney’s creative community.
