Kyoka and MT Pop arrive in Sydney this April for Red Bull Dance Your Style, leading workshops and a live street dance qualifier at Darling Harbour.
On a warm autumn afternoon in Darling Harbour, the space beneath the Pier Street overpass carries a different kind of sound. Footsteps echo on the concrete, basslines drift from portable speakers, and small circles begin to form where dancers test the floor with quick bursts of movement.
For one weekend in April, this unlikely corner of the harbour becomes the centre of a global dance conversation.
The arrival of Kyoka and MT Pop signals Sydney’s role in the expanding world of street dance culture. As part of the international Red Bull Dance Your Style tour, the two artists will guide workshops, observe battles, and share the stage with Australia’s rising dancers as the city hosts one of the most anticipated qualifying events of the year.
Unlike traditional competitions, the event unfolds without judges, choreography or predictable outcomes. Music arrives unannounced. Dancers respond instinctively. And the crowd – not a panel of experts – decides who advances.
For Sydney audiences, the presence of Kyoka and MT Pop brings global street dance within reach of the harbour’s edge.

Kyoka And MT Pop In Sydney’s Dance Community
Street dance has always travelled through cities by way of shared space – train platforms, basketball courts, empty warehouses and public plazas. When artists like Kyoka and MT Pop arrive in Sydney, they step directly into that tradition.
Kyoka, known internationally for her electrifying freestyle style, has long been a force within Japan’s dance scene. Her performances blend control with spontaneity, creating movements that feel both precise and unpredictable.
MT Pop, a dancer from Vietnam recognised for his powerful popping technique, approaches the dance floor with equal intensity. His performances are built around sharp isolations and explosive rhythm changes that seem to follow the music before it has fully revealed itself.
Together, Kyoka and MT Pop represent two distinct currents within contemporary street dance – different geographies, different styles, but the same instinct to respond to music in real time.
In Sydney, their presence becomes less about performance alone and more about exchange.
Workshops With Kyoka And MT Pop Across Sydney
Before the battles begin, Kyoka and MT Pop will spend time working directly with Sydney dancers through a series of workshops.
The first session takes place in Western Sydney at Bankstown Arts Centre, a venue that has quietly supported creative communities for decades. On Thursday evening, dancers from across the city will gather inside the studio space, stretching along mirrored walls before the music begins.
Here, Kyoka and MT Pop will guide participants through freestyle techniques, musical interpretation and the subtle craft of improvisation.
The following evening the workshops move to DUTI Studios in Newtown, where the Inner West’s creative energy forms a different backdrop. Enmore Road hums outside as dancers step inside the studio to learn from artists whose careers span global competitions and underground dance circles alike.
In these moments, Kyoka and MT Pop are not only visiting performers – they become teachers, collaborators and observers of Sydney’s own dance language.

Kyoka And MT Pop At The Red Bull Dance Your Style Qualifier
The culmination of the weekend arrives on Saturday 18 April beneath the Pier Street Underpass at Darling Harbour.
By midday the concrete space will be alive with movement. Dancers stretch, test footwork and greet friends before stepping into the competition circle.
During the Red Bull Dance Your Style qualifier, Kyoka and MT Pop will oversee the battles as part of the international tour. Their role connects Sydney’s event to a wider network of global dance competitions unfolding across multiple cities.
The format remains simple but unpredictable.
Sixteen dancers will eventually emerge from preliminary cyphers. From there, they compete in one-on-one freestyle battles where the music – chosen spontaneously by the DJ – could shift from hip hop to pop, house to funk, or anything in between.
There is no choreography prepared in advance. No judge’s scorecard.
Instead, dancers respond in the moment, drawing from styles that range across popping, locking, waacking, krumping, voguing and more.
The audience watches closely, and when the music fades, they vote for the winner.
With Kyoka and MT Pop present, the battles carry the attention of the international street dance community.
Street Dance And The Crowd’s Voice
Part of what makes the event distinctive is its reliance on audience participation.
At Red Bull Dance Your Style, the crowd is the final authority. When two dancers finish a round, the audience signals their choice with coloured voting cards or digital responses, creating a collective decision that feels immediate and democratic.
For Kyoka and MT Pop, who have spent years in global battle circuits, the atmosphere is familiar.
Street dance competitions have long thrived on this connection between performer and crowd. Cheers, laughter and spontaneous reactions shape the rhythm of the event as much as the music itself.
The result is an environment where every battle feels different.
One moment the music might shift to an unexpected pop anthem. Another round might feature a classic hip hop track that sends dancers into nostalgic footwork patterns.
Each time, the performers adapt.
And each time, the crowd decides.
