Rise Manly Will Light Up Sydney’s Northern Beaches This Winter

Rise Manly will return in June 2026 with light projections, winter events, live music and beachfront experiences across Manly’s streets and laneways.

Winter arrives differently in Manly. The crowds thin slightly after summer, but the coastline never entirely quietens. Ferries continue cutting across the harbour from Circular Quay, carrying visitors toward the Northern Beaches beneath pale afternoon skies. Salt gathers in the air along South Steyne. Surfers pull wetsuits tighter against the cold before disappearing into steel-grey waves.

By evening, the mood changes again.

Lights begin reflecting across The Corso. Restaurant windows fog gently from the warmth inside. Music drifts outward from bars and laneways while pedestrians move slowly between the beachfront and the town centre, wrapped in scarves and jackets against the ocean wind.

It is within this atmosphere that Rise Manly will return from 19–28 June 2026, transforming the suburb into a ten-day winter gathering shaped by light, food, music, and community. Presented by Northern Beaches Council in partnership with the Manly Business Chamber, the festival will once again reimagine winter not as an off-season lull, but as a time for the coastline to reveal a quieter, more intimate side of itself.

Unlike large-scale city festivals built around spectacle alone, Rise Manly appears grounded in place. The event unfolds not inside a single venue, but across streets, shopfronts, heritage buildings, beaches, bars, and public spaces already woven into the daily rhythms of local life.

Rise Manly

Rise Manly and the Transformation of The Corso

At the centre of Rise Manly sits The Corso, the pedestrian spine connecting Manly Wharf to the beach. During daylight hours, the boulevard functions as a thoroughfare for commuters, tourists, school students, and café-goers moving steadily toward the water. During the festival, however, the familiar streetscape will shift into something more atmospheric.

Interactive light installations will spread across the pavement, turning the ground itself into a moving canvas after dark. Families are expected to wander slowly through projections rippling beneath their feet while musicians perform nearby against the backdrop of winter sea air.

The heritage façade of Manly Town Hall will also become part of the experience, illuminated through large-scale projections that transform the historic building into a temporary artwork each evening.

Importantly, these installations do not attempt to overpower the environment around them. Instead, they appear designed to work with the texture of Manly itself – the sandstone architecture, narrow laneways, and open proximity to the ocean.

That balance between public spectacle and local atmosphere is part of what gives Rise Manly its distinct character.

Winter Rituals Across Rise Manly

Beyond the visual installations, Rise Manly will extend through cafés, bars, restaurants, and community spaces across the suburb, many offering experiences designed specifically for winter evenings by the coast.

At Hotel Steyne, live music and outdoor gatherings will spill toward The Corso, creating warm communal spaces where visitors can pause between events. Nearby, Henry G's plans to lean into European winter traditions with fondue and wine experiences intended to contrast the cool coastal weather outside.

Elsewhere, the festival’s mood shifts toward playfulness. The Espy will host après-ski themed parties where ski jackets and woollen hats feel momentarily plausible beside the beach. Surf Dive ‘n Ski Manly is expected to host winter movie nights complete with blankets and popcorn, embracing the nostalgia of colder evenings by the water.

This layering of experiences allows Rise Manly to feel less like a centralised event and more like a gradual unfolding across the suburb itself. Visitors may move from projections at Town Hall to live music near the beach, then settle into late dinners or drinks beneath outdoor heaters as the temperature drops further.

The festival’s rhythm mirrors the pace of Manly in winter – slower, reflective, and social without becoming crowded.

Rise Manly and the Winter Solstice Swim

Among the festival’s returning events, the Ice Cold Classic may remain the most distinctly tied to the landscape itself.

The annual one-kilometre swim from Manly Beach to Shelly Beach invites participants into the cold water at the height of winter, combining community fundraising with a ritual-like encounter with the ocean. Spectators often gather along the shoreline wrapped in coats while swimmers emerge from the surf laughing through the cold.

There is something unmistakably Sydney about the event: a city where winter rarely silences outdoor life entirely, but instead reshapes it into something sharper and more communal.

The inclusion of the Ice Cold Classic also reflects the broader philosophy behind Rise Manly. While lights and entertainment draw attention, the festival ultimately remains anchored to the coastline and community around it.

Even the planned Ferris wheel, expected to arrive as a new addition in 2026, feels less about spectacle than perspective – offering temporary views across the harbour, beach, and town during the year’s shortest days.
