The Big Screen Is Back For Parramatta’s Family Movie Nights

The big screen is back in Parramatta as Family Movie Nights return to local parks this April, bringing outdoor films, food trucks and family activities.

As twilight settles across Parramatta’s neighbourhood parks, the evening air begins to cool. The last traces of sunlight drift behind tall gum trees, and the open grass slowly fills with families arriving one by one. Picnic blankets are rolled out across the lawn, takeaway containers rustle open, and children weave through the gathering crowd with the restless excitement that comes before a film begins.

Soon, the projector will flicker to life.

This April, the big screen is back as Parramatta’s Family Movie Nights return to parks and reserves across the city. For a series of evenings spread across five different neighbourhoods, familiar green spaces will briefly transform into open-air cinemas where families gather beneath the stars.

The films may be the headline attraction, but the experience extends well beyond the screen. Food trucks will line the edges of the parks, roving performers will wander between groups of children, and themed activities will unfold long before the opening credits appear.

For Parramatta residents, it will mark the return of a tradition that has quietly become part of the city’s cultural rhythm.

Movie Nights

When The Big Screen Is Back In The Park

Outdoor cinema has a particular kind of atmosphere. Without the walls of a theatre, the evening unfolds more gradually. The sound of conversation blends with the rustle of trees, and the faint scent of food drifts across the lawn as the crowd settles in.

When the big screen is back, these parks will feel both familiar and newly animated. Children will test inflatable slides and fun houses before the film begins. Parents will find space to sit back and watch the sky darken above them.

For some families, the event will be part of an annual routine – an evening circled on the calendar each year. For others, it may be a first introduction to the simple pleasure of watching a film outdoors.

City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Martin Zaiter has said the aim is straightforward: creating a relaxed, welcoming night where communities can gather together.

Over the past decade, thousands of residents have arrived with picnic baskets, portable chairs and bags of popcorn, settling into the grass as the screen lights up against the night sky.

The Big Screen Is Back Across Five Parramatta Parks

This year’s program will move through five different parks and reserves, each hosting its own movie night.

The series will begin on Friday 10 April at Sue Savage Reserve in Toongabbie, one of the city’s newest public green spaces. As the evening begins, families will gather to watch A Minecraft Movie (2025), accompanied by themed LEGO building activities inspired by the film’s blocky digital world.

The following night, Saturday 11 April, the screen will shift to Northmead Reserve where audiences will watch Wicked: For Good (2025). Nearby, craft tables will invite younger visitors to create potions and decorate wands – small gestures that echo the magic of the story on screen.

The weekend continues on Sunday 12 April at Upjohn Park in Rydalmere, where Bad Guys 2 (2025) will bring animated adventure to the evening program.

Movie Nights

A second weekend of screenings will follow.

On Friday 17 April, FS Garside Park in Granville will host a screening of How To Train Your Dragon (2025). And finally, Saturday 18 April will see the series conclude at West Epping Park with Karate Kid: Legends (2025).

Each evening will carry the same open, family-friendly atmosphere – a mix of cinema, play and shared community space.

Activities Begin Before The Big Screen Is Back On

The film may begin after sunset, but the events themselves will start earlier in the evening.

Before the big screen is back on, the parks will fill with activity. Children will bounce between inflatables, climb through fun houses and try their aim on a soccer dart board. Food trucks will serve everything from hot snacks to sweet treats, while performers move through the crowd with small interactive shows.

Some activities will connect directly with the evening’s film. Minecraft-themed LEGO building stations will appear in Toongabbie. Craft corners will offer potion making and wand decorating during the Wicked screening. Other evenings may feature reptile displays or small creative workshops.

These details transform the night into something larger than a film screening. Instead of arriving just in time for the opening scene, families can spend hours in the park, letting the evening unfold slowly.

For younger visitors especially, the experience blends play and storytelling in a way that feels distinctly outdoors.

Movie Nights

A Decade Of Community Nights Under The Stars

Parramatta’s Family Movie Nights have quietly built a following over the past ten years. What began as a small community gathering has grown into an event that regularly draws thousands of people across the city.

Last year alone, nearly 5,000 residents attended screenings across the program.

Part of the appeal lies in the locations themselves. Parramatta’s parks are already central to daily life – places where people exercise, picnic or simply spend time outdoors. The movie nights encourage residents to rediscover these spaces in a different way.

When the big screen is back, the familiar landscape shifts. Trees become silhouettes against the night sky, and open lawns turn into shared viewing spaces.

It is a reminder that the city’s green areas are more than quiet retreats during the day. They can also become lively gathering places after dark.
