In winter 2026, that atmosphere will take on an unmistakably disco heartbeat as Velvet Inferno arrives in the Studio, transforming one of Australia's most iconic cultural venues into a glittering world inspired by the legendary dance floors of the 1970s.
Running from 24 July to 13 September 2026, Velvet Inferno will invite audiences into a nightclub where music, movement and spectacle blur into one immersive theatrical experience. Rather than recreating a single era, the production will celebrate the enduring spirit of disco – a genre that has always represented freedom, self-expression and joyful escape.
Velvet Inferno Rekindles the Spirit of Disco
The story begins when a young woman wanders into Velvet, searching for something she cannot quite define. Inside, nightclub owner Country Mike, played by Brendan Maclean, recognises a spark of possibility. Guiding her journey alongside the commanding presence of The Diva, portrayed by Australian entertainment icon Marcia Hines, the club becomes far more than a place to dance.
Inspired by the legendary Studio 54 in New York, Velvet Inferno will explore a world where appearances matter less than authenticity. Studio 54 became famous not only for celebrity guests but for its radical inclusivity, welcoming people regardless of colour, class, sexuality, gender or background. That same spirit sits at the centre of this new production, creating an atmosphere where individuality becomes part of the performance itself.
Instead of telling its story through dialogue alone, the production will weave together music, choreography, circus artistry and visual theatre, creating a continuous 70-minute experience that unfolds with the momentum of a night out rather than a traditional musical.
